Animal Psi wonders why we haven’t sold out of the Beru What Would I Do Without You cassette. We’re wondering the same thing.
Americana wrestles the glitch off the hill with time, and in the end, [Jessica] Collins appears more like a Samara Lubelski or Marissa Nadler for the dark and harmony which is now so dominant in the carnivalesque final track. Though certainly conspicuous among current cassette culture — it’s what excels the album from the start — Collins’ voice doesn’t demand recognition until this late strain of sustained verse: melancholic, spooky, and clearly capable of tremendous depth, it is soon after erased in an appendix of melodic miscellany.
It’s just a mention, but Brian Olewnick named Nick Hennies‘ Paths as one the best albums he heard in 2009. Olewnick has a discerning ear for improvised music and outer sound that we respect tons at TRHP.
